Ecotones of City Artist Statement
This series of digitally manipulated and photo-montaged images explore what it might mean for elements, pieces, parts, flows of the natural world, if left to their own device sans the touch of human hands, to re-enter our everyday lives- experiences which are now primarily spent in urban or peri-urban places,- to re-emerge in more expansive ways.
Would we take note of how each living thing has its own speed, its own sense of when to emerge, retract, lie dormant, speed up, be still, replicate, hide, convene with other like species and kin? … Even if in small ways and through the everyday: perhaps mundane, perhaps awe-inspiring, perhaps a simply detail in our daily movement through place.
When we consider all beings, what can this offer to us for our understanding of way of being in the world? Would we treat places that have moved away from their inherent ecological flows and sense of agency, often due to the workings of human intent, with a much stronger mutual sense of respect and care? Might we pay closer attention to points at which a living thing encounters our human environments and observe the choices they make within our spaces?
