Experimental Animation Studies Artist Statement

Utilizing found to objects as idea generators for stop-motion animation shorts, I combined, cut, re-formed, montaged, etc.  a packet of construction paper, a leftover length of ribbon, scraps, clay, the sand–lightbox in the UPenn Animation Studio and digitally manipulated photos which I printed and re-shot.

With the freedom of utilizing and reimagining some of these long-discarded objects, I was able to gain an understanding of timing, movement, and inherent storytelling, despite the inanimacy of the subject matter, when shooting and splicing in the animation studio.

This delightful experimentation was freeing and tapped into a kind of intuitive creativity that had been lying dormant. Thus, giving way to longer format experimental video and animation works that I continue to this day.
