Duet Study Artist Statement
Inspired by the work of Eikoh Hose, I began a photographic essay of this place in the Central Valley of California. Few people inhabitant these lands, yet those who do, continue to leave large imprints on the remaining natural systems and form earth, water and land in very broad-brush strokes. There are intermixed social-politico traditions and practices, oftentimes messy, community oriented and yet, oftentimes leave histories hidden.
In the pairings, I consider aspects of sometimes seemingly disparate objects which at first glance diverge, but then become interrelated as the photographic narrative progresses. In the framing of the camera, views are selected, they are deliberate. An overarching curiosity is what is beyond the frame, and how much the subsequent video footage, will/ can be a counterpart to this; in this study I paved the framework for the kind of video and still footage I was concurrently making. It is part storyboard, but also the unfurling of a larger narrative being drafting in my head with each shot.
