Metro Competition Category 1
Portland, Oregon | 2008
The requirements of this competition were to design a mixed-use living and commercial project on a multi-acre parcel of land within a forested riparian zone. Kina and her co-collaborators’ design approach drew from studies and observations of the regional habitat’s characteristics and environmental qualities.
Their proposal focused on contiguous greenways and flyway ‘fingers’ across the site to support and intensify the cultivated and native riparian forest landscapes, common spaces, eco-swales, and building development.
These flyways were organized as directional clusters running concurrent with the greenway tracks. The form of the built environments ebbs and flows based on use: housing, gardens, orchards, recreation fields, retail, neighborhood daycare, wood shop, craft center, fitness gym, offices, solarium, and greenhouses.
