Promoting Health Thru Multifamily Housing Planning Study

Portland, Oregon | 2014

Kina was engaged as a design consultant by the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BOPS) to help develop a Best Practices Handbook for promoting the health and welfare of residents in multi-family housing projects, with an emphasis on existing apartment complexes in East Portland.

Together with her coworkers at Constructive Form and in collaboration with Bill Hart of Carleton Hart Architects, she visited several East Portland apartment buildings and conducted existing site and building typology assessments. The visits gave insight to develop a set of improved site and building design recommendations. Along with the team, she worked to compile a series of strategies, policies and code recommendations to meet the project’s health and equity goals. 3-D models, sketches, photos, urban design diagrams and illustrations featured throughout the handbook support the recommendations.

Kina and the team presented findings and illustrations to a community youth workshop; a standout highlight of this project.
